Katureebe Warns Judicial Officers Against Quick Accumulation of Wealth

Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has asked Registrars and Magistrates in the country to focus not on money in their service, but effective administration of Justice.

While officiating at the opening of the Annual Magistrates Conference in Kampala, Katureebe pointed out that  greed for money more often that not has tempted a number of judicial officers into immoral practices like corruption.

“Each time Transparency International releases a report, the Judiciary is ranked second as the most corrupt in the country especially at the lower bench. Whenever the IGG releases a report, it’s the same.”

And while this doesn’t mean that the whole institution is corrupt, Katureebe said a concerning number of officers continue to engage in this behavior.

“When people refer to the Judiciary as corrupt everybody should reflect on himself and ask; Am I the one who has made the whole institution to be labeled Corrupt?”

The Chief Justice asked all magistrates and judges as they carry out their roles to ensure that they focus on building their carrier instead of focusing on acquiring quick wealth.

“Don’t copy other people’s lifestyle but work hard with faith until everybody congratulate and recommend you for a promotion.”

The Deputy Chief Justice Aliphonse Owiny Dollo appreciated the members of the lower bench for their distinguished service and called upon them to continue serving people with a human face because they represent the Judiciary at a community level.

“You should protect good name of judiciary and promote delivery of Justice as per the judicial oath”

“People’s out cry about Corruption is very high, you should not engage yourself in these acts because there is no way in which you can justify them”

This two-day conference which has kicked off on Monday attracted Registrars and Magistrates at all levels from various parts of the country.
