Kyadondo East Member of Parliament and presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine officially presented his presidential bid to Buganda Kingdom.
Bobi Wine presented his 2021 presidential bid to Buganda Kingdom Katikkiro (Prime Minister) Charles Peter Mayiga at Bulange Mengo on Wednesday.
Bobi Wine and his team first held a closed door meeting with Katikkiro Mayiga before they address the media in Bulange gardens.
“Although we had an opportunity to present to you our issue, allow me to present it to you publicly. I am Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the grandson of Kayiira and I have come here to report to you that I will stand for President to lead our country Uganda. We have had support from across the country,” Bobi Wine told Mayiga.
He added that although he and his National Unity Platform (NUP) party has enjoyed support from across the country, it is incumbent upon him to show that in Buganda where he hails, he has more support.
“Owekitibwa Katikkiro, allow me to officially present to you my presidential ambitions. In our tradition, we know that we get our blessings from home. If it is your will, I have received that blessing and the blessings of our forefathers. I am a son of Buganda and I am here to pledge that I will not ignore the issues of Buganda. Therefore, if the children of Buganda trust me like all other Ugandan children have trusted me, they will have won,” he said.
Bobi Wine also called on Mayiga to condemn police brutality.
Last Saturday, police teargassed members of the Mbogo clan and Catholic religious leaders at as a Mass service.
Although the Uganda Police Force led by its Chief Political Commissar Asan Kasingye tabled their apology before Mayiga, Bobi Wine called for prosecution of errant officers responsible for the act.
“We know that they have apologized but one cannot make an apology when they have not committed any wrong. We have laws that govern this country and we therefore add our voice to those calling for prosecution of responsible officers. If your voice is added to other voices of Ugandans, we will have justice,” Bobi Wine told Mayiga.
Meanwhile, Bobi Wine reported to Mayiga that Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament Francis Zaake was tortured by the men in uniform “accusing him of being a muganda.”
Zaake was arrested in April this year at his home in Mityana for disturbing relief food to the people during the COVID-19 lockdown. This was against President Museveni’s measures against the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
Zaake who was arrested in good condition, would later surface in hospital nursing severe injuries.
“The people who tortured him (Zaake) are the same people who teargassed our Mbogo clan leader (Kayiira) and rebuked our tradition,” said Bobi Wine.
Bobi Wine was accompanied by other senior members of NUP such as Mathias Mpuga, Medard Lubega Ssegona, Joel Ssenyonyi, Francis Zaake, Fred Nyanzi, Joyce Bagala, Aisha Kabanda, Shamim Malende, David Rubongoya, Muhammad Segirinya, Kazibwe Bashir Mbazira, Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala among others.
