NIGERIA: Hillary Clinton, Rihanna, Bobi Wine Condemn Attack on ‘End SARS’ Protesters

Former United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, Barbadian singer Rihanna Fenty and Ugandan presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine have joined the campaign to end police brutality in Nigeria.

End Special Anti-Robbery Squad (End SARS) is a social movement against police brutality in Nigeria. The slogan calls for an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a controversial unit of the Nigerian Police Force with a long record of abuses.

Mrs. Clinton, in a social media post on Tuesday night directly called on the Nigerian President Mohammed Buhari and the Nigerian national army to “stop killing”.

“I’m calling on @mbuhari (Mohammed Buhari) and the @hqnigerianarmy (Nigerian national army) stop killing young#EndSARS protesters. #StopNigerianGovernment,” she wrote.

Rihanna said her heart is broken by the “unbearable” events happening in Nigeria.

“I can’t bear to see this torture and brutalization that is continuing to affect nations across our planet. It is such a betrayal to the citizens, the very people put in place to protect are the ones we are most afraid of being murdered by. My heart is broken for Nigeria. It is unbearable to watch,” she wrote.

She hailed Nigerians for standing their ground against the brutality associated with extortion, arrests, beating and detention.

“I’m so proud of your strength and for not letting up on the fight for what is right. #EndSARS,” she added.

Meanwhile Bobi Wine, on his part, said he is outraged by the shooting of unarmed civilians in Nigeria.

“Standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Nigeria who are protesting against #SARS brutality! Outraged by reports of shootings and murder of unarmed citizens. We can’t be free until we’re all free,” he said.

SARS officers have been alleged to profile youths based on fashion choices, mount illegal road blocks and searches, conduct unwarranted temperature checks, arrest without warrant, rape women, and extort young Nigerians for driving exotic vehicles and using iPhones.

Other celebrities who have joined the campaign in condemning the acts of the Nigerian Anti-Robbery Squad include among others; rapper P Diddy, actress and television host Gabrielle Union.
