UIU Renews Workers’ Contracts After Museveni Address
Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has lifted suspension of its workers’ contracts following President Museveni’s Monday address.
On May 14, 2020, the university secretary, Mr Hussein Lukyamuzi, announced that contracts of all university staff members were suspended indefinitely until the university resumes operations.
But on Tuesday, 19 May 2020, IUIU Rector Mr Ahmed Sengendo said that all their staff are expected to resume their duties on June 2 in line with the presidential directives.
“Following the government’s directive permitting universities to reopen and start teaching of final students, the suspension of all staff ‘s contracts is accordingly hereby lifted,” he said
Mr Sengendo added that all staff are, therefore, expected to continue with their duties as before.
“Arrangements have been finalized to ensure that by May 22nd all staff at all IUIU campuses are paid their full May salary and staff welfare will continue to be one of Management’s top priorities . ,”he said
Mr Sengendo added that the University has every committed team of staff whom it values very much.
“According to the letter of Chairman of council and Rector dated May 13 2020 that communicated the decision to suspend staff’s contracts clearly states that the suspension would cease when the universities are allowed to reopen,” he said
Mr Ssengendo added that the University shall make necessary assessment of the impact of the return of only the final year students on June 2 on the finances of the university and make appropriate decisions of the welfare of their students and staff.
The Deputy Director of IUIU Kampala campus Mr Kasule Twaha said that although universities have been allowed to resume teaching one the challenges universities are going to face is that some of their students are international.
“We therefore urged the National Council for Higher Education to reconsider international students as they plan for final year students because from the communication of the president the airport and borders will remain closed and it means the students will not have access to resume studies by June 2nd,”he said
Mr Kasule added that as IUIU they are trying to look for these students and to have a contingency plan that when they come back they resume studies and graduate with others.
