Uganda Final Chess Olympiad Qualifier Kicks Off

Event: Uganda Open Rated Chess Tournament

Format: Swiss Format (Seven Rounds)

Venue: Nob View Hotel, Ntinda

The Uganda Open Rated Chess Tournament has officially kicked off today morning at the Nob View Hotel in Ntinda.

The event is the fifth and final Grand Prix event qualifier for the 2020 Olympiad in Khanty, Mansiysk, Russia.

The three-day event will run up to Sunday 8th March 2020 and prize money of Shs. 1.7 M is up for grabs for the best performers of the championship in the different categories.

The Olympiad Qualifier event has attracted a total of 80 participants who will be vying for the final slot on the five man team that will represent the country in in Moscow.

The Tournament is played in a Swiss format with seven rounds played in the entire event.

The top 12 performers from both Male and Female teams after all the five Grand prix qualification events, face off in the Olympiad Qualifiers final to determine the best five for each team that will represent Uganda in the Chess Olympiads slated for August 2020

FM patrick Kawuma Rated 2319 is the bookies favorite to dominate the qualification events for the Men’s team alongside FM Harouna Nsubuga, IM Arthur Segwanyi, Okas Walter and National team coach, FM Harold Wanyama

For the Women’s team, WFM Christine Namaganda, WCM Shakira Ampaire, WFM Gorreti Angolikin, Ritah Nsubuga, and Mugide Safina are considerable favorites to progress.
