Police Express Concern Over Increased Attack On Officers

Police is concerned over the escalating violence against its personnel in recent days.

This was revealed in a statement by the Inspector General of Police Okoth Martin Ochola delivered by spokesperson Fred Enanga in Kampala on Monday.

According to the commander, the law enforcement body in the recent days has registered an increase in attacks on officers especially by the public, an act he referred to as “disgusting” and vowed to defeat it.

“There are escalating levels of violence against our frontline officers while in the course of their lawful duties and we’re not going to tolerate any more of such attacks. We are going to ensure that all culprits of these disgusting actions face the law,” he said

The IGP says some people have resisted orders from officers yet officers are always carrying out lawful duties of assisting the public and ensuring there is safety and security.

At least 8 Police officers from different regions have been beaten by rowdy groups and some are still nursing injuries in hospitals.

In Bududa district, four Police officers from Kaato police station were attacked and beaten severely by an angry mob in Bunabusale sub county, Mashele village where they had gone to disperse people who had gathered for a cultural cleansing ceremony which violates   the set guidelines against Covid19 in the country.

The officers David Wakalo, Julius Ochwo, David Bamega and Paul Kasakya were stoned and cut in the fracas. They are currently undergoing treatment Bududa hospital.

One person was shot in the leg, and two suspects were arrested as 24 reportedly fleed to Kenya.

Another incident took place in Paricho sub county, Gulu district when the OC and OC CID of Paricho police were beaten to near death by people when they had gone to arrest a suspected robber.

It was reported that in this incident, a gun was lost but later recovered and six suspects arrested.

Also in Lira district, Police arrested one person in connection to assault of traffic officers.

The suspect was arrested after a video showing two Traffic officers, one grabbed by the collars and another one being rained on by punches went viral on social media.

Police says the two officers were also attacked while enforcing traffic laws in an area.

The same acts happened in Kampala during the arcade traders’ protest last week where police which was on patrol was pelted with stones.
