You Cannot Intimidate Me – MP Karuhanga Hits Back at Kadaga
Hon Gerald Karuhanga, the Ntungamo Municipality Member of Parliament has vowed to keep the pressure on parliament to heed to the recent court order blocking disbursement of UGX 10 billion to MPs.
Karuhanga says he has been receiving threats of disciplinary action from the Parliamentary Commission and the Speaker Rebeca Alitwala Kadaga, after he together with colleague Jonathan Odur dragged the house to court over the controversial allocation.
He says however, that he is not going to bow to their threats, adding that he couldn’t stand by as colleagues forked Covid-19 funds that the country’s health sector badly needs.
“So they must remember that we are representing our people and we are going to speak for them…this is not the time to start sucking blood of Ugandans at the time they have been hit hard by pandemic,” he said.
“No one will stop my colleague and I from exercising our rights.”
Karuhanga made the remarks yesterday while delivering food relief of 21 tons of maize flour,200 liters of fuel and a bull for Ntungamo Municipality health workers all worth over Shs 54Million.
The donation was handed to the Ntungamo district COVID-19 taskforce led by RDC George Bakunda, to be distributed in the municipality.
Karuhanga at the event, hailed the work done by the health workers across the country since the outbreak of the pandemic.
He assured health workers that he will continue to fight for their salary enhancement and staff houses.
On April 20, Karuhanga and his Erute North colleague Odur petitioned the Civil Division of the High Court through their lawyers seeking to block the controversial Shs10b allocated to MPs to help them fight the spread of COVID-19 in their respective constituencies.
High Court Judge Esta Nambayo ordered that the Shs10b Parliament had allocated to MPs, with each expected to get Shs20b should not be distributed pending the ruling.
The judge ruled that no MP should use this money until April 29, 2020 when the case against the Parliamentary Commission and the Attorney General will be heard and disposed of.
