UN Security Council Wants South Sudan Unity Government Formed in 2 Weeks
The United Nations Security Council has called on the South Sudan government and the rebel groups to form the second transitional government of national unity by November 12th 2019.
The UN Security Council team led by Ambassador Jerry Mathews Matjila, who arrived in South Sudan capital Juba on Sunday, held separate meetings with the two principals in youngest nation’s conflict; President Salva Kiir and armed opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar.
“The UN Security Council members held separate meetings with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the opposition groups on the progress of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, challenges in the implementation of the peace Agreement and drew-up conclusion on the formation of Unity Government by November 12,” said part of the statement released after the meeting on Sunday evening.
The security council wants parties in the conflict to quickly implement the second peace agreement signed in September last year to end the six year civil that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions.
The major challenge in the implementation of the peace deal has been security mechanisms on the integration of forces, a concern mainly fronted by the SPLA in opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar.
Ambassador Jerry Matthews reportedly assured Machar that the UN Security Council is ready to offer what it takes and directed both the Government and the opposition groups not to extend the formation of the Government anymore.
“UN Security Council Members are ready to offer any assistance and demands that would expedite the formation of the Unity Government on time,” said Ambassador Jerry Mathews.
The body has powers that include the establishment of peacekeeping operations and international sanctions as well as the authorization of military actions through resolutions.
UN already has a peacekeeping force in South Sudan but with limited mandate mainly to protect civilians in internally displaced camps within its mission’s jurisdiction.
