Ndejje University Warns Staff: Use March Salary Sparingly

With no end in sight of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ndejje University has cautioned its staff to spend their money sparingly as there is no likelihood for salaries for April and subsequent months.

This warning contained in a April 9 2020 letter comes a day after President Museveni ordered another 21-day lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus.

Elijah Kiyingi, the University Secretary, said the pandemic has hugely affected their operations as the source of income (students) remain home.

“There is no likelihood that salaries for April and subsequent months will be available given that the university derives all its revenues from students who were unfortunately sent home on March 20 2020 on account of COVID-19,” Kiyingi warned.

“To date all the offices remain closed and there is no indication when universities and other education institutions will reopen,” he added.

Education and Sports Minister, Janet Kataaha Museveni had earlier projected that schools would reopen on April 27 2020 but then the lockdown was extended till May 5.  

The total number of Covid-19 cases confirmed in Uganda has stayed at 55 while 12 patients have fully recovered  from the novel virus.

Bank of Uganda has since warned that the outbreak of COVID-19 has not only affected the financial health of the private sector and households but also “impaired the ability of borrowers to meet their debt obligations.”

This, according to Acting BoU Deputy Governor, Adam Mugume, “is a threat to the stability of the financial sector.”
