Police Noncommittal on Amanya Tumukunde “Treason Charge”
Police have said the arrest of Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, his sons and members of the presidential aspirant’s campaign team remains sensitive, leaving little room for a public inquiry into how the investigation is being conducted.
Tumukunde’s family members, currently manning his social media accounts as he is detained at Special Investigations Unit Kireka, said on Sunday morning that Amanya Nduhura Tumukunde has been equally charged with treason.
“Whilst Hon. Nyakecho and 12 others remain detained by police without charge, we now understand Amanya Tumukunde Nduhura has also been charged with treason,” said the brief statement embedded with the hashtag “#TreasonWithoutReason”.
When contacted on Sunday morning by ChimpReports about the charges slapped on Amanya, police spokesman Fred Enanga observed: “This is a sensitive investigation and we have left the investigators to do their work. There is no briefing from them or progressive report for now.”
He, however, said “the joint task team will give an update later.”
The new development means Tumukunde, facing treason charges, and his team members, are likely to stay in security custody for long without anyone hearing about them.
This website on Saturday broke the news of the arrest of Amanya Tumukunde, who stood in the Western Youth Member of Parliament in 2016.
Tumukunde sustained injuries the chaotic youth MP race as he campaigned for Amanya.
Amanya was picked from their home in the Kampala’s leafy Kololo suburb.
He spent Friday night at Kabalagala Police Station which is under Southern Division Kampala Metropolitan area.
Ordinarily, Amanya would have been taken to the nearby Kiira road division.
Gen. Tumukunde’s case is however a special one considering the involvement of different security agencies including military, Joint Anti-Terrorism and Police.
Tororo North MP, Annet Nyakecho and her husband Levi Otim Akonopeesa are among some of Tumukunde’s supporters who are still in detention.
A joint security operation commanded by the police Director of Criminal Investigations Department, AIGP Grace Akullo held Tumukunde’s team under lock at the presidential aspirant’s Kololo office before being transferred to several police stations in Kampala.
