Kanungu Prison Warder Held for Murder

Police in Kanungu district are holding a prison warder on charges of murder.

Victor Satya, a warder at Kanungu Prisons is said to have shot and killed a relative to one of the inmates who allegedly escaped from custody.

On Saturday, according to police, Satya had gone to Rwembogo Cell in Kambuga Sub county in the company of Principal Officer Obilia, Corporal Ronald Mwesigwa and Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Raphael Ogwal to effect an arrest of one Nasasira Gilbert (18) who had escaped from Kanungu Prison.

Nasasira had been serving a two-year sentence for causing grievous harm in 2017.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police mouthpiece says during Nasasira’s arrest, his family members resisted as his brother one Bannet Musika (22) brought a machete and attempted to cut Raphael Ogwal, who managed to dodge it.

“The deceased immediately ascended onto Satya who was shooting in the air to scare away the rowdy family members. Unfortunately, he shot Mukisa in the chest when he came too close,” Maate said.

The victim was rushed to Kambuga hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly on arrival.

Maate says police visited the scene of crime before arresting the suspect.

He adds that the rifle Ak 47 No 56-5810839 with 22 rounds of ammunitions was recovered and exhibited
