Hoima: Police Release 2 Journalists on Bond

Police in Hoima on Thursday released two Journalists from Kampala who were recently arrested on allegations that they had a plan to lead a peaceful demonstration aimed at saving Bugoma Forest.

The two journalists are Joshua Mutale and Vanex Watebawa from Water and Environment Network (WEMNET) a coalition for Environmental journalists.
According to the bond form dated 17th September 2020 , these two are charged with Inciting violence to cause unlawful demonstrations.
These were released after they presented two sureties Hamuza Kitakule and Emmanuel Okello, who were tasked to ensure that  they report back to Police on 2nd October 2020.
Early this week ,  the two reporters together with others travelled from Kampala to Hoima where they were expected to sensitize residents on Environmental conservation on one of the local radio stations.
The following day they were arrested and detained by police. Anothet four journalists were arrested for taking the photos of their detained colleagues without permission  but were later released.
“We are happy that all of our colleagues have been released, but sad about the frivolous charges brought against the duo. The police should drop these charges unconditionally,” remarked Robert Sempala Executive Director Human Rights Network for Journalists
He further called upon all journalist to remain focused especially on Environmental issues and accountability.
