Covid-19: Museveni hints at reopening schools, churches

President Museveni has hinted at reopening schools, churches and other places that have been closed to close six months since March over the Coronavirus pandemic.

On Saturday during the national prayers day held at State House in Entebbe, religious leaders asked government to reopen churches noting that they will follow the set guidelines.

“For the last 30 days, the religious leaders have traversed this nation, have coached, oriented and sensitized all our leaders up to the grassroots. We can authoritatively say, it is partly safe to step out but with caution,” Born Again faith leader apostle Dr Joseph Sserwadda said.

The religious leaders said after sensitizing their colleagues at all levels on what to do, they think it is high time churches are reopened but with strict guidelines to be followed by believers.

Speaking in response, President Museveni said the reopening will depend on the discipline of Ugandans.

“The problem is just discipline. Recently we had youth elections and eight million Ugandans took part but it was done properly,”Museveni said.

He noted that having seen the youth elections where over eight million people participated and there was no case of spread of the virus, discipline is key in fighting the virus.

The President said he was happy with religious leaders for becoming custodians of their own health by sensitizing other people in their communities against the spread of the virus.

“That is how it should be. We(national task force) shall meet on Tuesday and shall look at all those issues. We shall look at the schools, churches and the bars and see what to do,” he said.

According to the President, the Tuesday meeting will decide whether the schools, bars and churches can be reopened now.

Museveni however noted that he was happy with majority of Ugandans who have listened to government advice and heeded to the guidelines put in place to curb the spread of the virus.

“It is the minority who don’t listen and that is how we are getting these cases. You can now hear that the biggest number of cases is in Kampala because people of Kampala don’t listen. Imagine, 20 of the 29 people who have died are from Kampala!”
