Uganda’s Gen. Paul Lokech Meets Kiir over Force Integration

Ugandan special military envoy to South Sudan, Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech on Monday met President Salva Kiir at State House in Juba, commonly known as J1.

In a statement to the media, the Executive Director in the Office the President, Mr. James Deng Wal said the purpose of the meeting was to share information on the progress of the implementation of peace agreement.

Kiir lauded President Museveni for fulfilling his commitment on supporting peaceful conflict resolution

“The President (Kiir) appreciated the efforts of the guarantors to the Revitalized Peace Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan,” said the statement.

Museveni and Sudan Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman, Gen. Burhan Fatah are the guarantors of the South Sudan peace process.

Museveni last month appointed Lokech to oversee the process of the chapter two of the Revitalized Peace Agreement that deals with the security arrangements.

Maj. Gen. Okech told his host that his mission is to oversee the assessment, screening, training and integration of government and opposition forces as stipulated in the peace agreement signed in September 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Lokech was escorted to State House Juba by Ugandan Ambassador to South Sudan, Robert Rusoke.

Meanwhile the Ugandan special envoy to South Sudan, Betty Bugombe assured Kiir of the commitment of Uganda to the people of South Sudan on the implementation of the peace process.

The guarantors to the revitalized agreement on the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan are exerting pressure on parties to agree and form a transitional government of national unity.
