Baby Theft: Col. Nakalema Grills Police Officer for Mismanaging Case Involving Dubious Doctor

The head of State House Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) Lt. Col Edith Nakalema on Wednesday grilled Kawempe Police Division CID officer identified as Sherry Mbabazi for mismanaging a case involving a dubious doctor.

The police officer who was appearing before the ACU at President’s office is suspected to have been corrupted by a one doctor George Senkoomi, the proprietor of Kamic Medical Center located in Kawempe Division, Kampala.

It is said that Dr Senkoomi has been involved in illegal exchange and sell of babies from his facility to city prominent businessmen in Kampala.

Reports indicate that in March, a whistle blower blew Senkoomi’s cover after he allegedly exchanged a young couple’s newly born baby with a dead body whose owners are unknown.

On March 20, it is said that a one Rogers Engong, a resident of Kona Zone took his wife identified as Gloria Awino to Kamic Medical Center to deliver but after delivery, their baby was exchanged with a dead body which was handed to them by doctor Senkoomi to take for burial.

Victims allege that later, they discovered that they had buried a dead body that does not belong to them and that their baby was handed alive to a city pastor identified as Raymond Mage under unclear circumstances.

After four days, when the doctor learnt that the couple had known that they had been duped, he called them and returned their baby.

However, the victims reported the incident to Kawempe Police division but the CID officer Ms Mbabazi frustrated them on several occasions.

On Wednesday, Doctor George was arrested by the unit and Col Nakalema interrogated the police officer Mbabazi for mismanaging the case and releasing suspects of a serious case.

“They bring to you the owner of the clinic, the pastor who had bought the baby and you keep tossing up people,” Nakalema wondered.

The police officer is accused of conniving with the suspects to the extent of asking for the victims to pay for a DNA test which Nakalema says is unacceptable.

Col Nakalema asked the police authorities to take firm actions against its officer and also exhume the body of baby that was handed to the young couple.

Relatedly, the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Association disowned the embattled doctor saying that he is not its member.

Authorities later established that the health facility is in existence illegally and it was ordered to close business as investigations take shape.

Uganda is grappling with cases of baby theft in both government and private medical facilities in the country.
