President Museveni Sends Representative To Rwanda,Delivers ‘Optimistic’Message To Counterpart

President Yoweri Museveni has conveyed a message to his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame that has been portrayed as “positive” by Kigali.

The ambiguous message was delivered to the office of the President of Rwanda, by the Ugandan Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Adonia Ayebare.

The Rwanda Presidency in a tweet on Sunday night said: “President Kagame held a positive meeting with Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, President Museveni’s Special Envoy, who traveled to Kigali with a message regarding the two countries’ relationship”.

Details of the discussion have not been divulged although this was the first public attempt by two countries to converse after the December 13 Kampala meeting that concluded with no agreement.

The meeting was part of the implementation of the Luanda peace deal signed in Angola in August.

Representatives of the two countries preferred to refer the matter to both Presidents for resolution.

The Rwanda border with Uganda at Gatuna has been closed since February 2019 – which has seen trade relations struggle between the two countries.

Rwanda claims Uganda supports armed groups that are attempting to overthrow the Kigali administration. Uganda denies this and accuses Kigali of infiltrating the country’s security agencies.
