Ministry of Gender Bids Farewell to Janat Mukwaya
The outgoing Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Hon Janat Mukwaya on Friday officially handed over office to the newly appointed Minister, Hon Frank Tumwebaze, who is coming in from the ICT Ministry.
Speaking at the handover and farewell ceremony at the Ministry headquarters in Kampala, both Tumwebaze and the newly appointed Minister of State for labor and former Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana applauded Mukwaya for her tremendous contribution to the Ministry.
Tumwebaze said Mukwaya will now join the team of “historicals” and added that he had previously studied a course in gender, not knowing that he would end up in the Gender Ministry.
“What a blessing for me; I didn’t know I was going to be deployed here. About a year ago, I chose to go and do some other Master’s called MBA. In that masters I do a paper “Gender in management” little did I know that I was coming to the Ministry of Gender. So Mr PS (Permanent Secretary) when you hear me asking, have you done gender analysis, have you done gender mainstreaming to eliminate inequalities, just know I was prepared by God,” said Tumwebaze.
He noted that Gender is his first Ministry he has found a sizable number of experienced State Ministers to help the him.
To the employees of the Ministry of Gender, Tumwebaze said, “I promote transparency and open talk. I discourage intrigue. I am More of an informal person. I respect procedure but I am not so formal. So anybody anytime can come to my office and we share.
The newly appointed State Minister for labor Hon Mwesigwa Rukutana who once held the position said, “I am so happy to be back. My coming back here is coming to a home which I loved and cherished so much. When I was first appointed Minister of State for labor seven and a half ago, this Ministry was not as it is. It was in a sorry State.”
“I remember I put very minimal contribution to reviving it to a standard where Mama Janat Mukwaya found it. She has added more and more and more,” said Rukutana.
He noted that as he returns to Gender Ministry, he will continue with the struggle to oversee a smooth relationship between all the workers.
“To make sure that all the workers are respected and to make sure that there is harmony between workers, employers and Government. I am happy I am back home to work with the team I was very happy to work with,” Rukutana added.
The employees of the Ministry portrayed her (Janat Mukwaya) picture and handed it over to her as a sign of remembrance
