Onyango’s Heroics: Sundowns Complete Domestic Treble After Nedbank Cup Triumph

Goalkeeper Dennis Onyango Masinde’s heroics in goal were crucial in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday evening.

Onyango had missed Sundowns previous three games due to injury but returned to action with epic goalkeeping attributes at Orlando stadium.

Domestic treble winners, Mamelodi Sundowns

Gaston Sirino scored the priceless goal that handed Sundowns the title and completing a treble adding to their Telkom Knockout Cup Championship and the ABSA Premiership triumph.

The Masandawanas had two golden opportunities, just moments into the game but Themba Zwane squandered the scoring chances.

Towards the break, Cranes captain Onyango pulled out a finger tip save to deny Victor Letsoalo’s looping header as the game went in goalless at halftime.

Goal hero Sirino found the back of the net in the 80th minute from his close range strike beating Celtic’s goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

Bloemfontein Celtic’s Andile Fikizolo later forced another masterclass save from Onyango thwarting his close range shot with only five minutes to time.

The Nedbank Cup title was Mamelodi Sundowns’ fifth overall in history adding to their 1986, 1998, 2008 and 2014/2015 triumphs.
