Kanyamunyu Confesses to Killing Akena, Asks For Forgiveness
City businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu has confessed that he killed social worker Kenneth Akena in November 2016.
While appearing before the Acholi elders on Saturday, Kanyamunyu said he did not understand why he shot Akena adding that there is “tupidity, primitiveness, foolishness and evil” within him.
Further, Kanyamunyu apologized and sought healing and reconciliation with Akena’s family and Acholi elders.
“To be honest, I will be lying to you if I told you that I have fully comprehended the tragedy of that fateful day. The Primitivity, stupidity, foolishness and evil that exhibited on that day is not something that I knew was in me but I now recognize. I now recognize that deep within me, there is evil that I did not know about,” Akena told Acholi elders.
“That is the reason that I am remorseful, that I am sorry and that is the reason that I ask for forgiveness. I ask for your understanding and time for this healing process to begin and for time to comprehend the magnitude of the tragedy,” he added.

Kanyamunyu killed Akena in November 2016 after the latter’s car accidentally scratched his car in the parking at Lugogo.
Akena, 32 who succumbed to bullet wounds at Nakasero hospital told the medical personnel and his relatives before he breathed his last that the two people who rushed him to the hospital are the ones that shot at him.
He had been rushed to the hospital by Kanyamunyu and his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari.
Akena’s revelation compelled police to arrest Kanyamunyu and his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari.
Later, the police also arrested Kanyamunyu’s brother for allegedly helping hide the murder weapon.
In 2017, weeping and grief by Akena’s relatives and politicians such as Minister for environment Beatrice Anywar was witnessed at the Court when UN AIDS Executive Director and Dr Kizza Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima came to court to stand as surety for the release of Kanyamunyu and his co accused. Although the bail application was denied on that day, it would later be considered by the Court on a later date.
Although, Kanyamunyu, on Saturday confessed to killing Akena and asked for forgiveness, he and his co accused in Court persistently pleaded not guilty in the court proceedings.
