Museveni Okays Sports Resumption

The President of Uganda HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has finally okayed the resumption of sports activities in the country following the long suspension due to the Covid19 pandemic.

Museveni announced the lifting of a ban on the Sports economy during his 20th Nation address on the state of Covid-19 on Sunday evening at the State House in Entebbe.

The fountain of honor noted that the open-air Sports activities will return without spectators while the indoor activities should hold on.

He as well announced a mandatory PCR testing of players, 72 hours before a matchday and the test will expire in 14 days while active club players should be contained in quarantine ” bubble”.

It should be remembered that it’s now over six months since the President instituted a ban on all Sports and public gatherings on 18th March 2020.

The March country-wide sports suspension saw different domestic activities including the National Basketball League, 50 Over Men and Women’s National Cricket League, Uganda Handball League, Badminton, National Volleyball League among others, all cancelled.

However, football activities including the FUFA Big League promotional playoffs, Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 16 stage, U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, 2021 CHAN tournament, 2021 AFCON Qualifiers and the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers are poised to return this year.

The 2020/21 Uganda Premier League will return on the 17th of October while the AFCON qualifiers will resume between 9-17 November 2020 with day 3 and day 4 matches. The penultimate matches are scheduled for 22-30 March, 2021.

Meanwhile, the African qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, which are in the second round, will take place between May 2021 and November 2021 while the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers are slated for 31st October – 2nd November 2021.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament which accommodates only locally based players will take place from 16th January to 7th February 2021 in Cameroon.
