Experts:”All Ugandans have a role to play in the oil and mining sector”

Experts have said that everybody in the country in whatever field has a significant role to play in the oil and mining Sector.

They called upon Ugandans to attend all the meetings on oil and mining to be aware of the opportunities they can grab.

The remarks were made during a discussion on how prepared is the agriculture sector to leverage the opportunities that come with the Oil and Gas Sector.

The discussion featured live on NBS TV on September 20.

According to Tom Ayebare, the manager, Economic and Financial analysis at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, the country has done a lot of sensitisation on the opportunities in the oil and mining sector.

He said the National Suppliers Database is open for Ugandans who want to do business in the sector.

“We are beginning to see the white smoke. We must wake up and prepare ourselves. We are competing internationally. We must step up our game so that oil benefits all Ugandans,”he said.

Victoria Ssekitoleko, the vice chairman, Private Sector Foundation Uganda said majority of farmers have heard rumours about opportunities in oil sector but very few are prepared to take them.

“The pineapple farmers in Luweero have no idea about the opportunities in Hoima. I am worried they are not fully aware,”she said.

She said the opportunities are there not only to the farmers but all players in the agricultural sector.

She stated that the youths should be trained to prepare them.

Experts also advocated for the need to look at financing schemes for smallholder farmers so that they can move beyond rudimentary methods of farming.
