MP Tayebwa  apologises after being captured on video beating Umeme contractor

Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa has bowed to pressure and apologized for mercilessly beating a contractor with power distributor Umeme who was disconnecting him from a transmission line he had connected illegally at his building in Busaabala, a Kampala suburb.

In a video that went viral on Friday, the legislator is seen questioning the man who had disconnected him before ordering for his undressing and was beaten mercilessly.

The incident has since sparked outrage and attracted countrywide condemnation of the Member of Parliament, whereas the power distributor opened up assault charges against Tayebwa at Katwe police station.

However, following the incident and the pressure mounted on him, the legislator has since met and apologized to the Umeme contractor, identified as Bonny Bukenya.

“We have since reached out to the victim of the incident and expressed our sincere apologies. Together, we have held reconciliatory meetings with all affected parties and reached an amicable settlement,”Tayebwa said.

The legislator said the move to apologise and reconcile with the Umeme contractor was moved by the condemnation he received from several members of the public who watched the video recording.

“We wish to apologise to the nation for this unfortunate incident,” Tayebwa said.

In the same statement, Bonny Bukenya, the Umeme contractor who was assaulted confirmed the reconciliatory meeting between the two parties.

“This is to confirm that I have had a meeting with Hon. Thomas Tayebwa who has apologized to me and my family over the matter that I now believe a case of poor judgment on his part,”Bukenya.

He applauded members of the public who brought the matter to light to ensure he gets justice .

The Nile Post has learnt that the legislator instructed his lawyers to ensure the assault case filed at Katwe Police Station is withdrawn after reconciling with the victim.
