Students Drown as Canoe Capsizes on Lake Bunyonyi

Two teenagers on Tuesday drowned while two others survived when the boat they were using capsized on Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional police spokesman says the incident happened on Tuesday at around 5.40pm.

The deceased have been identified as 15-year-old Ninsima Moreen, a student of Creamland high school Kabale, who is also daughter to Deus Asiimwe a Catechist of Karambo Roman Catholic Church; and 15-year-old Kakuru Edivance, a pupil of Kyenyi primary school.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Robert Ndyomugabe, a student of Cream land high school and 12-year-old Akampurira Milvil   of Karambo primary school survived as they were able to swim to safety.

“The victims were using a canoe near Karambo landing site and the boat just capsized. The cause is not yet established but they didn’t have safely gear like life jackets,” Maate said.

By this morning, the body of Kakuru Edivance had been retrieved by local divers while that of Moreen Ninsiima was still missing.
