Ugandans in Diaspora Join the Fight Against Malaria in Luweero
Ugandans staying and working in the diaspora have extended a hand to people of Luweero district through a three-day health camp where over 2000 people have been diagnosed and treated
At the camp held at Holy Cross Health Centre III, Kikyusa in Luwero district Dr. Claire Kwagala the camp leader revealed that various people were diagnosed with different diseases and illnesses.
The camp included among others, eye treatment, HIV Tesst and counselling, dental services, general medication, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Malaria and UTI testing and treatment.
Majority of these patients at the camp were suffering from malaria, and were given mosquito nets on top of treatment.
“We have been able to offer the basic medication and basic laboratory tests; almost every household has a patient suffering from malaria, we have received families with more than five children suffering from malaria with temperatures as high as 40 degrees,” Dr. Kwagala said.
The Luweero District Health Officer, Dr. Innocent Nkonwa noted that last year over 27, 000 cases of Malaria were recorded in the district and a lot of intervention have been done to curb the vice but more still needs to be done.
Dr. Martha Kikuvire an eye specialist at the camp revealed that they received 80 cases in their section, mostly the elderly.
The Executive Director Operation One Project who organized the camp, Alex Lubega; a Ugandan based in California said that the organisation is ready to partner with government to up the game against the increased spread of malaria and other health challenges in the country especially among children.
“I understand the challenges that my people face especially when it comes to the health stand, a lot of people can’t afford to seek out medical treatment because of poverty and other challenges including access to a health center and that is the reason as to why we have decided to come up with a medical camp in the short run,” Lubega said.
