Kampala Police Register A Drop In Crime

Uganda Police Force has said that there is a slight reduction in crime especially in Kampala Metropolitan since the inception of the five new security strategies.

This notice was revealed on Friday by Spokesperson Fred Enanga in a security briefing at Central Police Station Kampala.

Enanga said that since September, Police has conducted over 10 operations in the city center cracking down on the dealers of suspected stolen items.

According to Enanga, the operation is done to deny criminals a place to sell stolen items.

Over 200 shops suspected to be dealing in stolen items such as mobile phones, motorcycles, scrap metals among others have been raided.

“All these were hot spots for selling such items,” he said.

Adding that “Such dealers were the ones encouraging the commission of such crimes and other forms of anti-social behavior like iron bar hit-men, burglaries, vandalism and phone snatchers.”

In the latest operation, Police said that 118 shops with strong evidence to steel metal crimes especially utilities were raided and exhibits recovered.

The exhibits recovered mainly comprised of items from Telecom service providers, National water, UMEME, and Uganda National Roads Authority.

The shops with strong metal crimes were located in Kisenyi business center, Nakitende, Musajja Alumbwa, Shamba complex, Kisenyi trading centre, Mwanga 2 and New Taxi Park.

Police said that 20 people were arrested and 9 have already been changed in courts of law.

Police Spokesperson told journalists that they have screened the exhibits and that Police  invited technical persons from UNRA, National Water UMEME and UEDCL to CID to enable consolidate the evidence.

Mr. Enanga also revealed that there has also been a reduction in boda boda thefts saying that they have cut off the market for stolen motorcycles.

Many hit-men and dealers have been arrested in the ongoing operations and charged in courts of law.

Reports from Kampala Metropolitan Police indicate that in October at least 178 motorcycles were recovered and so far 89 have been processed and are ready to be handed over to the rightful owners.

Victims of Boda Boda thefts were urged to cross check at Central Police Station Kampala room 64 with original particulars of their stolen motorcycles.
