Ugandans complain of unemployment but dont want to embrace govt poverty alleviation programs- Bantariza
The deputy Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, Col. Shaban Bantariza has said it is unfair for Ugandans to continue complaining of unemployment when they have failed to embrace poverty eradication programs by government.
Bantariza made the remarks on Saturday during a meeting with facilitators of the presidential initiative on job and wealth creation also known as Emyooga in Kampala.
“Wealth and job creation should not be a duty of only government. It is the duty of every one. Emyooga is one of the government initiatives to fight poverty but many don’t bother to join these programs. President Museveni cannot go everywhere telling people to embrace these programs but when he tells you to join, don’t hesitate,”Bantariza said.
The former army spokesperson said it is unfair for the population to keep on blaming government for unemployment when most of them have refused to embrace government programs to get them out of poverty.
The unemployment rate in Uganda is expected to reach 2.40% by the end of the year 2020 according to the Trading Economics global macro models and analysts’ expectations.
However, Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world and according to the deputy government spokesperson, there is need to consider the health of the population while taking about unemployment.
“Many people condemn us(government) of not having jobs for the young population and it is true Uganda has one of the youngest populations because we immunized them so that they don’t die while young. Job creation does not go in tandem with population growth. The young people without jobs should be happy for us because we made them healthy,”Bantariza said.
Bantariza told the facilitators of the Emyooga presidential initiative to always have such facts on their fingertips while talking to the population about the project that is meant to improve livelihoods.
“Always have facts. There should be a logical flow of information and always be mindful of the context while talking to the population about Emyooga initiative.”
About Emyooga
Emyooga is a new initiative by President Museveni targeting 19 clusters organized under SACCOs at constituency level where each will get shs30 million as seed capital from the government.
However, SACCOs for elected leaders will each get shs50 million whereas private teachers will get shs60 million as part of the program to be implemented by the Microfinance Support Centre.
It is also part of the broader NRM principle of socio-economic transformation in which the government has committed 68% of the country’s homesteads, currently in the subsistence of market-oriented production.
