Schools to Reopen on September 20th with Candidate Classes

After nearly 6 months of closure due to the outbreak of COVID-19, schools will now be reopened in phases beginning with candidate classes on September 20, 2020.

The decision was taken in a meeting held by President Museveni and the national COVID-19 Taskforce at State House Entebbe on September 1, 2020.

The decision to reopen schools in phases was seen in a letter from the Education Minister and First Lady Janet Museveni to the Minister of Finance Matia Kasaija requesting the latter to release the capitation grant which had been halted due to closure of schools.

“The meeting resolved that a phased reopening of schools, starting with candidate classes be implemented starting 20th September 2020,” said Janet Museveni in the letter.

“It has been brought to my attention that the capitation grant for the third term 2020 was not released to the schools in July due to the fact that institutions were still closed. On account of the position taken in the above stated meeting, this is therefore to request you to cause the release of funds to the beneficiary schools to prepare for the phased reopening of schools,” she added.
