NRM’s Nyakana, UNRA officials clash over Centenary Park land again!

Godfrey Nyakana, a city businessman, yesterday clashed with officials from the Uganda National Roads Authority(UNRA) over a decision to vacate Centenary Park and pave way for the construction of the Kampala Flyover Project.

The incident took place when UNRA officials together with MPs on the Physical Infrastructure Committee were touring Centenary Park to assess the progress of the flyover project.

UNRA on Wednesday told the committee that Nnalongo Estates, a company owned by Nyakana’s wife, Sarah Kizito  that has been managing the park, has frustrated the progress of the project because they have declined to vacate the area.

The Shs 684 billion project is being financed through a loan agreement between Uganda and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Kizito and Nyakana refused to vacate the premises to pave way for construction on the grounds that their lease was extended by KCCA.

According to Kizito, the issue regarding the land was already resolved and they are only waiting for the Memorandum of Understanding from government.

She said the agreement was to allocate about only two hectares of Centenary Park land for the construction of the multi billion project.

William Matovu, the head of Land Acquisition at UNRA informed the MPs that one of the challenges that might delay the project is failure by the authority to secure enough land at Centenary Park.

Nyakana asked the Kampala Capital City Authority to sit and resolve the matter amicably.

The committee chaired by Nakifuma county MP Kafeero Ssekitoleko resolved to summon Nnalongo Estate to appear before the committee to resolve the impasse.

Nnalongo Estates has previously been at the centre of controversy in 2017 when the company blocked KCCA from accessing the same land to enable the installation of sewage pipes by the National Water Sewerage and Corporation (NWSC).
