5 Family Members Drown in Lake Bunyonyi

Five people on Thursday evening died and one survived when the canoe they were travelling in capsized in Lake Bunyonyi in Rubanda district

The victims were reportedly traveling from Ndekura landing site in Hamukaka village in Muko sub county to the side of Karambo in Ikamiro parish.

The deceased include Ayebazibwe Glorious, 20, her two sisters Theyvare Kyogabirwe Pretty, 9, and Ninsiima Ronah aged 8.

Others include a 6-year-old girl only identified as Shanitah and a seven months old baby whose particulars were not yet revealed.

The sailor, one Dalton Niwampa aged 22 of survived by swimming to safety.

Police attributed the accident to strong winds and the fact the boat was overloaded since it was meant to carry only three people.

According to the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate, efforts are still underway to retrieve the bodies from the lake.
