Mourning Mkapa: Flags in Uganda to Fly at Half Mast for 3 Days

President Yoweri Museveni has joined the rest of African leaders to mourn the death of Benjamin Mkapa, the former President of Tanzania

In his message, Museveni described the death of Mkapa as a great loss to Africa basing on the achievements he has made towards the unity and development of Africans

“It is with a lot of sadness that I heard of the death of our brother, H.E Benjamin Mkapa. I started working with H.E Mkapa in 1967 when we were university students and he was the chief editor of the Nationalist newspaper, ” Museveni.

“During the 1979 crisis when he was still a foreign affairs minister, Mkapa was delegated to handle the Moshi Conference that brought together the Ugandan exile groups including FRONASA. When he became President of Tanzania, we worked together to consolidate the East African Community.”

“I convey my condolences and those of the People of Uganda to Anne, the children and the people of Tanzania.’

Museveni as such, declared three days of mourning in Uganda starting Saturday 25th July 2020 at 6am

 

During all these days, the Uganda Flag will fly at half-mast at all government bodies.

On Friday, Kenyan President H.E Uhuru Kenyatta also announced three days of national mourning where all Kenyan flags will fly at half mast

Mkapa passed away on Friday night at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam Tanzania

He was the third president of Tanzania who served from 1995 to 2005
