Makindye: Man Killed by Mob in Attempted, Illegal Night Land Eviction

One person was Thursday night put out of action by an angry mob in a foiled land eviction that was taking place in Makindye division on the outskirts of Kampala city.

Kampala Metropolitan Police said this in a statement released by deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigire.

“Police in Katwe responded and stopped an illegal eviction that was being conducted at around 9 pm in Kifampa Zone, Makindye II Parish in Kampala City by a group of people, armed with clubs, hammers and machetes,” he said.

Police report indicates that the armed and violent group travelled to the scene in a motor vehicle registration number UBC 337A, costa white in colour and were carrying out illegal eviction at the home of Abdu Mbeera, a resident of the same zone.

During the eviction, the victims and other locals reiterated and beat up one of the attackers identified as Farouk Mutakaya, a resident of Bwaise II, Kawempe Division who was severely injured and died on the way to Mulago hospital.

The post mortem report on Friday morning indicated that he died of injuries inflicted by blunt objects.

It is said that the dispute started on Thursday morning when one of the sons of the family claimed to have sold the land to a city businessman and at night a group of armed violent people stormed the area and immediately started demolishing rental units that were occupied by nine families.

Police strongly believe that the group was hired to carry out an illegal eviction and it could be the reason why they were doing so at night under the cover of darkness by-passing the right procedures.

Police said that when the demolition started, the affected families and concerned residents immediately informed police at Katwe about the disturbing incident and they responded immediately.

The law enforcement strongly condemned the act and assured that they will arrest the perpetrators including the masterminds of this crime.
