Covid19: UPC Pleased With Gov’t Steps So Far

The opposition Uganda People’s Congress party (UPC) has applauded Government measures to contain the spread of COVID 19 which include banning both public and private transport, closing schools and among others.

The UPC National Chairman Lawrence Okae on Wednesday said the measures were worth it.

“The party welcomes Government measures and response towards COVID 19 pandemic such as temporary suspension of schools, ban of public gatherings, worshipping places, public and private transport to stop the spread of the virus,” said Okae.

“There is hope that if public effectively follows the set up guidelines, we shall win the fight against Coronavirus.”

Okae also praised Government for distributing relief food to persons affected by Presidential directives on the containment of COVID 19 pandemic despite Parliament’s decision to halt the exercise.

On Saturday 4th April 2020, Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda launched relief food distribution program to provide relief food to people affected by Presidential directives on containment of COVID 19 pandemic despite Parliament’s decision to halt the exercise.

The Parliament had halted the exercise of relief food distribution saying that Government had planned to roll out the exercise in only two districts of Kampala and Wakiso.

The Members of Parliament called on Government to roll out the exercise countrywide.

Okae praised the program and called on Government to strengthen it further.

“We appreciate Government for launching the food relief program but the distribution rate is low and people are suffering. Government is therefore called upon to redouble her energy and provide people with necessary necessities,” he said.

Meanwhile, he condemned the excessive use of force used by the security agencies (Police, UPDF and LDUs) while implementing presidential directives on containment of COVID 19.
