Police Disperses Over 600 Mourners at Burial Ceremony in Wakiso

Police on Sunday dispersed over 600 mourners who had gathered in Kiryamuli village, Gombe, Matugga sub county in Wakiso district for burial, which is contrary to presidential directives on the prevention of COVID-19.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire says the burial was not following Ministry of Health guidelines on containment of COVID-19 pandemic.

“The territorial police in Matugga received a tip off from concerned citizens about the burial that had attracted over 600 mourners. The burial management was not following Ministry of Health guidelines on public gatherings, social distancing, wearing of masks and hand washing,” said Owoyesigire.

He added, “The burial was in contravention of the Standard Operating Procedures issued by the Ministry of Health which prompted security teams to swing into action and managed to disperse the unlawful gathering.”

In the process, the Local Council chairman Fred Banadawa and Defence Secretary Badru Lusiiba.

The two suspects are currently detained at Matugga police station on charges of doing a negligent act likely to spread the disease.
