Minister Tumwebaze Decries Police Selective Action on Media Bully Mercenaries
The Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development, Frank Tumwebaze has decried the Police selective action on some mercenaries using mainstream and social media to propagate smear campaign against targeted leaders.
Tumwebaze, known for frankly speaking his mind, said on Friday evening that he has been a target of sustained slander campaign for years but has never realized a single positive response from police.
“Is it ok for some people to be maliciously smeared and no action is taken? I have personally (and some other known leaders) been target of this paid for smear campaign on social media, TVs etc,” said Tumwebaze.
“In all these, I have always complained to Police but no action has ever been taken.”
The Minister’s comment was triggered by the reports that a presidential advisor and a social media blogger have been charged for harassing and disturbing the peace of Bukedea woman MP, Anita Among.
Police boasted of using proficient technology to detect, locate and apprehend one of the suspects from Kamuli district in eastern Uganda.
Police CID Spokesman ASP Charles Twine went ahead and appealed to Ugandans to report cyber transgressions against them, ignoring the fact that the likes of Tumwebaze have reported for years and no action taken.
Just last month, fabricated letters purportedly from Rwanda alleged that Tumwebaze and Minister of State for Finance, David Bahati channeled USD$ 600,000 and USD$ 1,050,000 respectively to Kigali for COVID-19 fight. No suspect has been arrested and prosecuted over the matter.
Another forged letter was published on social media in April purportedly from Rwanda Police on the seizing of non-existent properties belonging to Frank Tumwebaze in Rwanda.
Tumwebaze has also been maliciously linked to treasonous activities like plotting with Kigali to cause regime change in Uganda in 2026.
In January 2015 fake news stating that Tumwebaze, then Presidency and KCCA Minister, had deposited Shs 10bn in the defunct Crane Bank, was created and widely circulated by people who are yet to be identified or charged by police.
When contacted on phone, CID Spokesman said they have just acquired the technology to identify and locate suspects.
“Of late no one can harass the other using a gadget and we fail to get him or her. I am appealing to those who had old cases to report and we revisit them,” said ASP Twine.
The malicious fabrications against Tumwebaze and Bahati were however made just last months.
