Mobile Money Charges Gradually Reinstated

Uganda’s biggest telecom companies MTN and Airtel have announced a gradual return of charges on Mobile Money transactions.

The charges, the companies say, will resume today at half the rate.

Since March, Ugandans have been enjoying zero charge on all Person to Person (P2P) and Mobile Wallet to bank transactions.

The charges were removed by MTN and Airtel on March 19th as a measure to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission by physical exchange of currency notes.

Amid the different lockdown extensions by government, this relief was extended up to 25th May 2020.

Yesterday however, the companies announced that they will be intruding these charges in a gradual process.

“MTN UGANDA and AIRTEL UGANDA wish to inform the public that effective 26th May 2020, all MTN mobile money and Airtel money Person to Person (P2P) transactions on the same network and Mobile Wallet to bank transactions will be gradually re-introduced at a 50% discount to standard tariffs for a period of 30 days,” they announced in a joint statement.

“All MoMo/Airtel Money pay transactions between customers and merchants will continue to attract zero transaction charges for the next 30 days. “
