Coronavirus: 7th Ugandan Dies in UK

At least seven people of Ugandan origin have succumbed to the deadly Coronavirus in United Kingdom.

They include Dr Labeja Acellam, 69, a medical doctor at University Hospital Lewisham, UK.

Dr Labaje’s death came hardly a fortnight  after cleaners, caterers and porters who walked out of the hospital in protest against the ongoing misconduct of their employer ISS.

For two consecutive months the multinational company withheld wages from its employees, leaving many of the hospital’s lowest paid workers essentially destitute.

This occurred during a period of increased anxiety for all Lewisham Hospital workers as the number of patients testing positive for Coronavirus grew.

Amidst a complex, dangerous and developing pandemic, these workers were forced to risk everything simply to have their wages returned in full.

British National Lorna Davis complained on social media: “The virus – we are isolated in Lewisham hospital and no one is taking care of us – please pass this around – no medication- no nurses no cleaners – we are just been left. No one given us food today

Seem no doctors for days – please help us.”

Many described Dr Labeja as a man of the people who cared for all and sundry.

Sam Oloya mourned Dr Labeja: “I will value all the daily advice you gave me whenever I came to your shop on Lewisham High Road . And I will never forget your efforts in trying to save my cousin brother when he was admitted in Lewisham Hospital . Unfortunately I can’t come to mourn you because of ban on gatherings …Ajwaka RIP till we meet again.

The deceased was born in July 1950 in Acholi region, Northern Uganda.

Other Ugandans who have succumbed to Coronavirus include Sarah Acheng, Charles Paddy Kayiwa, Jane Kobong, Gertrude Lukeca, Boniface Okee and Susan Onyac.

At least 44 cases of Coronavirus have been confirmed in Uganda with no death.

29,474 cases of the virus have been confirmed in United Kingdom with 2,352 deaths.
