Tumukunde Lawyers Rush to Secure His Bail

Lawyers representing jailed former Security Minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde have vowed to immediately kick-start the process of having their client released on bail.

The lawyers announced yesterday that they are gathering all the necessary documents to file a bail application before the Criminal Division of High court.

On Wednesday, City Hall grade one Magistrate Valerian Tuhimbise remanded Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde to Luzira on charges of treason and unlawful possession of fire arms.

Shortly after the court session, Counsel Alex Luganda said one of the reasons they are rushing to secure Tumukunde‘s freedom is his unstable health situation.

“Being that he was picked from the hospital and his health condition evidently not good, we asked court to allow him access his personal doctor at Luzira and this has been allowed.” Luganda said.

Only High Court has jurisdiction to hear bail applications for persons charged with capital offences

Tumukunde arrived at court on Wednesday at around 2.30pm under tight security from various security organs.

He was being supported by two individuals while entering and leaving Court.

He was driven away in a Uganda Prisons minibus with a Prisons patrol pick up which was escorted by other vehicles.

In the court session only few people were allowed in the court room after being scrutinized.

Prosecution contends that retired Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde on 5th March 2020 at NBS Television during the Morning Breeze show, made utterances to wit “if I was Rwanda I would wish to support people who want to cause change” aimed at instigating the Republic of Rwanda to cause unlawful change of government.

Its further alleged that on 13th March 2020 at Impala Avenue Kololo in Kampala district he was found in possession of an AK 47 and Star Pistol without valid fire arm certificates.
