Museveni to Speak Out on Gay Rights After Meeting Byanyima

After 5 years, President Yoweri Museveni is expected to once again address the nation on matters concerning homosexuality in the country.

The President reportedly promised to make a public address on the matter, after discussing it with Mrs Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director UNAIDS, the United Nations body that is leading the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

Byanyima on Tuesday met with the President Yoweri Museveni at State House in Entebbe, where they discussed among others Uganda’s strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

According to Byanyima, she and the president discussed “at length” the issue of human rights and the rights of gay people in Uganda.

Mrs Byanyima also dismissed media reports that the President spoke harshly about homosexuality during the meeting.

Government owned New Vision reported Thursday that the President had “warned the western world against advertising homosexuality as a way of life in societies that do not share similar sentiments”

Mrs Byanyima described this report as “misleading,” and announced that the President will be speaking for himself on the matter soon.

President Museveni was initially supportive of the 2014 Anti-gay law and sighed it days after it was passed by parliament.

The law was however struck down months later by the Constitutional Court on grounds that it was passed by the house without quorum.

Amid growing international economic pressure, President Museveni changed tone on the matter and discouraged Parliament from reintroducing the law.
