Deputy AG Designate Jackson Kafuuzi Reappears Before Appointments Committee

Hon Jackson Kafuuzi, whom President Yoweri Museveni late last year appointed to replace Hon Mwesigwa Rukutana as Deputy Attorney General, is this Friday morning reappearing before parliament’s appointments committee for clearance to take his new office.

Hon Kafuuzi was among the 9 new ministers that appeared before the committee for vetting on Friday January 3^rd, but his name was not forwarded to State House to take the oath with the rest, the following week.

According to the Kyaka South MP, he was not able to get court clearance that is required in for his new job in time.

To serve as Deputy Attorney General, according to Article 119 (a) of the Constitution, one needs to prove they have been practicing as a lawyer for a minimum of seven years.

After vetting, Kafuuzi says, the committee wrote to the Chief Registrar of Court, to confirm his seven-year experience.

However, at the time the court registrar wrote back to parliament, the committee chairperson, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga had travelled out of the country, and so his name was not among those sent to State House.

Yesterday, ChimpReports understands, Parliament wrote to Hon Kafuuzi inviting him to reappear for vetting at 9:30 this morning.

Kafuuzi says he has more than 8 years under his belt as a practicing lawyer.

“I graduated from Makerere in 2002 and completed the bar course at LDC in 2003,” Kafuuzi told NBS recently.

“I was put on the list of lawyers allowed to litigate before High Court on 19^th January 2012. That’s 8 years.”
