Minister wants all cultural institutions on board to promote human rights

The state Minister for Gender and Cultural affairs has called on the Uganda Human Rights commission (UHRC) to bring on board all cultural institutions in order to promote human rights among different cultural settings.

Speaking to cultural/religious leaders during an engagement meeting held in Entebbe, Peace Mutuuzo said cultural institutions are the fastest way of fostering human rights and development.

Mutuuzo noted that cultural leaders play a big role in promotion of good health through communal services and that the government of Uganda loses around Shs 14 billion on communicable diseases.

Victoria Rusoke, a member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), said the commission is ready to promote culture and criticized the practice of Female Genital Mutilation arguing that its abuse of rights of girls and women.

David Mpanga, the minister for Special Duties in Buganda Kingdom noted that cultural institutions are an integral part of Uganda and they help in promotion of human rights.

He tasked the commission to involve cultural leaders in formulation of concepts for human rights.
