Lango MPs Write to Works Minister over Lira-Kamdini Road

Members of Parliament from Lango sub-region have written a letter to the Works Minister, Monica Azuba Ntege over the stalling of work on the Lira-Kamdini road, Lira-Kampala highway.

The letter signed by the Deputy Chairperson Lango Parliamentary Group, Paul Amoru, said temporal repair works including filling deep potholes with marram and opening of some filled up drainage on the highway, which has been in a bad state for years, started in February 2019.

“In February this year, Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA started temporal rehabilitation of the 67.9 km Lira-Kamdini highway which is a major road in Lango and is also part of the Great North road that stretches from Busia, through Tororo, Mbale, Soroti, and Lira up to South Sudan via Gulu district,” said part of the letter.

Amoru said they have however got information that UNRA wrote to the contractor, Mota Engil Africa; a Portuguese company to halt repairs under unknown circumstances.

This he said is unfortunate since most parts of the highway are in bad shape.

“If this is true, then it would be unfortunate that the setback came at a time that we needed their services to work on most appalling spots like the stretch from Kamdini Township on Lira Highway at the URA check-point, Loro Township, Okole Swamp stretch and Corner Park up to Barmindyang Primary School and the stretch of Amuca to Ayap swamp as you enter Lira town at Odokomit trading Centre.”

Amoru also stressed that the bad state of the road is hampering business in the sub-region.

“Above all, this road has also affected our businessmen and women who usually transport their goods and services because of its bad status,” he stressed.

The legislators want to meet Azuba next week to get firsthand information and the plans to quickly rehabilitate the road.
