Museveni says MPs are frustrating plans to increase teachers’ salaries

President Museveni has said that MPs have continually frustrated government’s plans to increase the salaries of teachers and scientists.

Museveni made the remarks during the national celebrations of the International Teachers’ Day at State House Entebbe on Tuesday.

“I need you the people to talk to your MPs to agree with this. I am also aware of the salary disparities among government workers, some are taking home so much, while others are earning so little. We shall have a review  [of the salaries] using the Unified Salaries Board to address this matter,”he said.

Museveni however urged teachers all over the country and the Ministry of Education to tailor the education system to the needs of people.

“We should teach what will help Uganda and Africa move forward .One time I called Professor Baryamureeba (Venansius). I said to him that since you are a serious computer wizard/scientist, please make for us one computer. Up to now, he has never gotten back to me,” said Museveni.

Speaking about the coronavirus pandemic, Museveni said in the last seven months, he has not heard that a child has died from Covid-19 therefore schools can open safely and the students study well if they are all vigilant.

“If the transporters and schools observe what they have to do, then it’s doable. If you see them doing what they aren’t supposed to do, boycott them. Let’s all be inspectors of Covid-19 SOPs compliance,”he said.

The minister of education,Janet Kataha Museveni said government recognises teachers as change agents whose contribution cannot be underestimated.

“We recognise the challenges the teachers went through during this time and acknowledge all the efforts the teachers put in place to ensure learning continues amid the Covid-19 pandemic,”she said.

She said with God’s help, the country shall find a way of living through the pandemic.

“The SOPs we sent to all learning institutions, both private and public, are sufficient training to protect the teachers and students from getting Covid-19,”she noted.
