Four Arrested in Recent Telecom Hacking, Police Warn of More Attacks

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations Department (CID)has arrested four people suspected to be connected to a recent cyber-attack on two telecom companies Airtel and MTN, and Stanbic Bank in which billions of shillings were reported stolen.

On Wednesday, The CID spokesperson ASP Charles Twine revealed that from the ongoing investigations, it was established that there was unauthorized access to the systems of the two telecom companies and some financial institutions.

“The criminals hacked into the systems of one of the aggregators that enable communication between banks and telecommunication companies. What I can assure you of is that investigations are vigorously being undertaken by a team of proficient investigators and we are very certain that upon the system audit, we shall know how much was lost and how the offence was orchestrated and later executed,” he said.

Earlier reports showed that over 5 billion shillings was remotely stolen by hackers”

Twine told the press that there have been some arrests and more than four people are being processed with a view of linking them to the scene or linking them with some people who are still at large.

“We are very confident because we have deliberately built a competent team that will actually understand how this offence was committed and the real culprits will be arrested and prosecuted in courts of law,” Twine said.

The Criminal Investigations Department says such attacks are on the rise and that commercial banks and other financial institutions have reported than 10 attempts on their systems.

Globally, statistics show that 1.2 trillion US dollars is lost every year through cyber-attacks. It is indicated that every after 39 seconds there is an attack on a system.

The law enforcement body hence called upon individuals, institutions and other corporate institutions to build strong safe guards both physical and soft mechanisms in form of cyber security.
