Covid19: FDC Tight-lipped as Besigye Self-Isolates

Officials at the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) are hesitant to open up on the health of the party’s former leader Col Dr Kizza Besigye who is feared to have been exposed to Covid19.

Col Besigye revealed last evening that he had gone into self isolation, sparking frenzical speculation on social media.

This he said was the reason he was unable to attend the funeral of former Kampala Mayor Nasser Ntege Ssebaggala.

“Fare thee well Al Hajj Nasser Ssebagala (Seya). Unfortunately I’m in self-isolation and couldn’t personally participate in his send off. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family,” Besigye posted yesterday.

Following the post on social media, Besigye’s contacts went off.

When contacted this morning for an update on the Colonel’s health, FDC’s deputy spokesperson John Kikonyogo said the party was yet to receive communication about Besigye’s health.

However, the Party Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija who has worked closely with Besigye under the People’s Government said he was not in position to devulge any information about his health.

“That is not information for you to publish. That is a personal matter,” Kaija said.

“That man is a medical doctor and for the years I have worked with him, he has taught me that someone’s health is not something you go discussing in the public.”.

By Monday morning it was unclear whether Col Besigye had been exposed to the Covid19 virus or if he tested positive.

Col. Besigye, a trained physician has been one of the most vocal campaigners in the fight against Covid19 the country.

Using his social media platforms, Besigye has been running weekly podcasts on how Ugandans can contain the deadly virus that has so far killed over 1million people worldwide.

His message has largely centered on immunity boosting through healthy nutrition that he says is key especially as the country sees rapid community spread of the virus.
