2021 Presidential Aspirants Rush to Fix Name Issues
With just about four months to the next general elections, a number of aspirants seeking to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the race have rushed to sign Poll Deeds to fix discrepancies in their names.
The aspirants that have signed to ascertain their names include Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP), General Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) and Gen Henry Tumukunde who intends to run as an independent candidate.
Until recently, these faced danger of being rejected by the Electoral Commission on grounds that the names appearing on their various academic documents did not match those on their current national identity cards.
In his poll did, Bobi Wine stated that he had previously been known as Kyagulanyi Robert R, Kyagulanyi Robert Sentamu and Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Roberts.
“I do declare that from the date hereof, I shall at all times, on all records, deeds, documents, testimonial dealings or other acts whatsoever, maintain and use only my said name Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu,” he swore.
On his part, former army commander Gen Muntu pointed out that he was known in the past as Mugisha Muntu Gregg, and in other academic documents as Mugisha M. Gregg.
He now wants to be know as Mugisha Muntu Gregory.
Gen Tumukunde on the other hand has sought to adopt his name Kakurugu, which in his academic papers was always abbreviated.
In the past he says he was referred to among others as Tumukunde Henry BK, Tumukunde Henry K and in others papers as Tumukunde Henry Brian Kakurugu.
“I have adopted the use of my full name Kakurugu that formerly appeared as an initial on all my documents…so that I may here after be called Tumukunde Henry Kakurugu”
Other non-presidential aspirants that have rushed to fix their name issues include former junior lands minister Idah Nantaba who wants to adopt the name Erios that is missing on some of her academic papers.
High Court recently ruled that the Electoral Commission has a right to de-nominate a candidate on the basis of discrepancies in their names as indicated on their National IDs and Academic documents .
As such, the Electoral Commission will not nominate a candidate whose names on the National ID do not match with those on their Academic documents unless the candidate officially changes his/her name through a deed poll incase of major discrepancies.
