Prof Nawangwe:”We are going to restore the Ivory Tower in the shortest time possible”
The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has said that the institution is going to do what it takes to restore the gutted main administration building as soon as possible.
His comments followed the destruction of the main administration building by fire which destroyed records and property worth millions of shillings.
The fire that started at around midnight was able to spread to almost half of the building where several offices were affected.
Nawangwe said the unfortunate incident that befell the institution is unbearable but in the shortest time possible, the situation will normalise.
“It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable,”Nawangwe wrote on his social media accounts.
”But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible,” he added.
In a statement, police said they are actively investigating the cause of the fire.
According to police, fire and rescue services responded quickly and managed to contain it’s spread .
“The fire is believed to have started from the roof spreading to floors that house both the records and finance departments. A lot of property has been destroyed,”police said .
