Joshua Cheptegei’s 5000m World Record Performance Voted Best Moment of August

The World Athletics body has voted Joshua Cheptegei’s 5000m record breaking display as the Athletics moment of the previous month of August.

This follows Cheptegei’s stellar performance in the Diamond League that took place in Monaco, France last month.

The Ugandan broke the 5000m World Record posting a timing of 12:35.36 to better Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele’s long standing record of 12:37.35.

To win the best Athletics moment, the Ugandan saw off Karsten Warholm, Timothy Cheruiyot and Valleria Allman.

Timothy Cheruiyot recorded a timing of 3:28.45 in the 1500m in Monaco while Karsten Warholm recorded the second fastest ever on his way to win the 400m hurdles in a European record time of 46.87.

Valeria Allman put up a US discus record of 70.15m and made the podium but could not edge closer to Uganda’s finest.

The World Athletics tweeted four photos of the nominees and the winner was determined on number of retweets.

Joshua Cheptegei’s photo managed to attract over 37,000 retweets while none of the other three neared 100 retweets.
