Police orders commanders to be strict on enforcing Covid-19 guidelines, curfew

The Police force has directed all its commanders countrywide to be strict on enforcing the various guidelines including curfew meant to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

In a message to all Regional Police Commanders, District Police Commanders, Police stations and Police posts, the Police Director in charge of Operations, AIGP Edward Ochom says there is laxity in implementing and enforcing the guidelines which has seen an increase in the Covid-19 infections around the country.

“It has been observed with great concern that there is laxity in enforcement of the Covid-19 guidelines given by the Ministry of Health. Many have not been fully enforced and this may lead to an increase in the spread of the Covid-1p pandemic   and endanger the lives of Ugandans,” AIGP Ochom says in the message.

He notes that wearing of masks while in public places, taxis, boda bodas and private cars  has not been done by the members of the public, whereas curfew is no longer been observed and consequently, several bars, shops, arcades, private cars and passengers vehicles operate beyond the stipulated 9pm time.

Order

According to the message, Police commanders countrywide have been ordered to fully enforce the Ministry of Health guidelines against the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.

“Take appropriate action against anybody disregarding the directives and always endeavor to get evidence of such incidents or acts by capturing and organizing both video and photographic evidence to ease investigations and prosecution of offenders,” AIGP Ochom said in the message.

The Police director has also warned that serious action will be taken against errant commanders or officers who neglect to enforce the directives.

“Commander alert squad is hereby directed to inspect and take appropriate action against negligent commanders and officers.”

The development comes at a time when the number of Coronavirus infections, especially in greater Kampala area has gone up.

On Thursday, Uganda recorded 155 new Coronavirus cases, 71 of whom were from the greater Kampala area.

As of Thursday, a total of 2679 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Uganda whereas there have been 28 deaths over the virus.
