Mercy Baguma’s Painful Death Sparks Fury in UK
Reports that Mercy Baguma, a Ugandan woman reportedly starved to death in her apartment in Glasgow’s Govan district have triggered horror and anger across United Kingdom.
Thenational.scot said Baguma, a single mother in her 30s, lived with her one-year-old son in Glasgow’s Govan district.
Her body was found there on Saturday, with her malnourished youngster by her side.
While media reports indicate Baguma may have gone without food or care for several days, close family members say she had a medical condition.
“Mercy had health problems. Her death was sudden and unexpected,” the deceased’s friends said in a brief statement.
Uganda is yet to issue a statement on this development.
The Permanent Secretary of Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Amb Patrick Mugoya was not readily available for comment on Wednesday morning.
Baguma’s associates said they were “devastated” by her death, eulogizing her as an “amazing mother, sister, best friend, friend loved by all.”
They added: “Mercy was always positive and always put her family first, especially her son. Her smile made everyone so welcome and comfortable. Mercy has left her one year old son and family back in Uganda.”
The bereaved family is raising money on Go Fund Me to give Baguma a proper send off and something for her son.
“Please consider helping out her loved ones through this difficult time as they navigate this tragedy and move forward in life without her. Donations will go directly to her son, family to help with end of life costs and future expenses,” said the deceased’s family and friends.
By Tuesday night, more than the fundraising had smashed its £10,000 target to raise £12,000.
Glasgow Greens councilor Kim Long was quoted by the media as saying: “Mercy Baguma’s death is appalling. She was no longer allowed to work and forced into destitution – a trap created by UK Government rules which deliberately remove all safety nets.”
Kim added: “A baby has been starved and robbed of his mother and a woman of her life. This was preventable and is outrageous.”
The Scottish Women’s Rights Centre stated: “No woman or child should ever lose her life in this way. We are deeply saddened and alarmed by these news. Our thoughts are with Mercy Baguma’s loved ones.”
