Josephine Kasya, Uganda’s First Elected District Chairperson Quits Politics

Canon Josephine Kasya, the first woman to be elected district chairperson since the introduction of local councils in the country has quit elective politics.

Kasya was elected unopposed in in 2001 as the LC5 chairperson of Kanungu district, when it was curved from Rukungiri.

She had been the Rukungiri district vice-chairperson.

Kasya told ChimpReports on Thursday that she had decided to retire from politics, saying she had done enough for the people of Kanungu.

“What I have done for the people of Kanungu is enough. 20 years is enough. Let others begin where I have stopped,” Kasya said.

She noted in the interview that being a female district leader was not an easy task, but added that she was proud of what she was able to achieve.

Kasya says she will now be devoting her life to farming which has been her life’s desire.

“I will however be available for any consultations for whoever will be voted in the forthcoming elections,” she said.

So far, five men have been nominated to take part in the NRM primaries for the district chairman seat.

These are Charles Bamuhata Asimwe, Sam Kajojo, Caleb Kipande, Zepher Mugisha and Kenneth Tumuramye.
